Santa Lucia (or St. Lucy or Sankta Lucia in Swedish) is an Italian Christian martyr known as the patron saint of light, celebrated on December 13th, the traditional day of her death in 304 AD. Her legend, which has merged with pagan winter solstice traditions, features prominently in Scandinavian Christmas customs, where a young girl dressed as Santa Lucia, wearing a crown of candles and white, leads processions and brings saffron buns.
